Reviews of Dr. Harold Fortuin

Rachel King, parent of student

I was lucky to start my son with piano lessons from Dr. Harold Fortuin as a young child. He patiently guided him from the very beginning with both finger techniques and note reading, and later on added sight reading and music theory. He does very few boring exercises and primarily learns through new pieces, both from method books and from other sources. Before the pandemic he did 4-hands piano music from time to time, either with him or with another piano student, and he includes some pop and jazz along with the Classical. When he played in local competitions he often came home with prizes because he gave him music comfortable for his level, and prepared him to play with style as well as the basics. He is both an inspiring teacher and performer - thank you Dr. Harold!

It has been a pleasure hearing Dr. Fortuin's piano students year after year at the Suzuki Institute of Boston's holiday concerts, as they grew from beginners to expressive intermediate pianists playing Classical and holiday music (these including his own children who also learned violin from me). We have also been very happy to retain him as our Senior Staff Piano Accompanist for many years, given his excellent technical and musical skills accompanying both advanced and intermediate strings students. He is also great at improvisation, doing a number of fun things on the spot at concerts.

Lou–Lou's Music Together

I met Dr. Fortuin when his children attended my Music Together classes as babies to toddlers. I was always impressed with his enthusiastic participation in class and at home with them. After his kids aged out of the program, I appreciated how the family volunteered for our holiday concerts year after year, especially given how well Harold prepared them with all aspects of their performances of Classical and holiday music on piano and violin, viola, and cello, and how their skills grew so impressively over the years. Harold also provided excellent, often improvised accompaniment in any key and style for Music Together songs working from lead sheets and with our ensembles including voice, flute, guitar, and a sing-along audience. We look forward to resuming holiday concerts with their participation once the pandemic is over. I highly recommend Dr. Fortuin for music lessons.
